Lakelands Train Station – Life Cycle Design

Located on the Mandurah Line between Warnbro and Mandurah stations, which are 23 kilometres apart, Lakelands Station will help ease the growing demand for public transport in the southern suburbs by reducing the need to travel significant distances to access train services.

More than 2,300 passengers are expected to board at Lakelands Station each day in 2023, growing to 3,500 in 2031.

As part of the Metronet Sustainability Strategy, a life cycle assessment is required at stages (15%, 50%, 85% and 100%) of the design to inform design development.

eTool’s scope on the project included the modelling of the whole of life emissions at various stages of design of the infrastructure and station building over the life span of 120 years.

Breakdown of life cycle emissions over various categories

The LCA analysis highlighted that:

  • 22% were coming from energy use and 78% were materials related (embodied emissions)
  • 36% of life cycle emissions were coming from recurring impacts during the operation of the facility (maintenance, repairs, replacement etc.)
  • 22% of life cycle emissions were coming from energy used during the operation of the facility
  • 5% of life cycle emissions were coming from transport
  • 3% of life cycle emissions were coming from construction

Following strategies reduced whole of life Co2 by 36%

  1. High efficiency LED lights for the car parking, bus interchange, station platform and station building (minimum 130 lumens per watt)
  2. High efficiency elevators
  3. Lower emissions concrete for pavements and precast walls (50% blast furnace slag with 50% recycled water)
  4. Value engineering to reduce the volume of concrete and steel
  5. Lower impact refrigerant gases for air conditioning systems (R32)
  6. High water efficiency fixtures such as toilets, taps and showers
  7. Lower intensity car park lighting for out of hours
  8. 44.5kW solar PV system
