Seattle Public Schools (SPS), the largest primary and secondary school district in Washington State, has embarked on an ambitious decarbonization initiative, positioning itself as a leader in sustainable education infrastructure. SPS is transitioning to 100% clean and renewable energy by 2040. Their commitment encompasses eliminating fossil fuel use across all district operations – electricity, heating, cooling, cooking, and transportation. New buildings must exclude fossil fuel infrastructure and major renovations are required to prioritize electrification and zero-emission technologies.
SPS partnered with Altura to analyse embodied carbon emissions from energy conservation measures (ECMs) across over 100 schools, advancing their goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.
